OCF 580 EXll
This is probably a dumb question, but being somewhat new to OCF I was reading a book and he kept saying that his on camera flash is turned off (not firing) but still acts as the master controlling the slave units it Ettl. My question is how to turn the 580 on my camera off so it does not fire but is still on to control the slave unit. Also if you are controlling the slave does the exposure compensation control on the camera controls the slave exposure? Just plain confused.
Thanks

Master Flash (On or Off)
When set to "On" the Master will contribute to the overall exposure. When set to "Off" the Master will control the slaves without firing during the overall exposure.
go to http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/control...articleID=3466 and look for the "quickguide to canon speedlite 580exii"

Just look in the manual. It will show you how to set the flash so it does not fire - however, don't be fooled by the pre-flash that does fire, that's what controls the slaves.

Better yet look here. The manual is sort of confusing.

Remember, even with the master turned off, the flash gives a short pre flash to obtain exposure information and relay to the slave. So you still have a short pop, about 1/32 power I think.

It would also be a good idea to point the on camera flash towards the slave so it has a better chance of recieving the signal. No such thing as a stupid question.

Here is a good video that explains the master/slave.
