I've got a 7D, 50EXII, TT1 TT5. For the most part they work well. Until you get around 25 feet away, the flash won't fire. For my purposes as a portrait photographer, I don't need to shoot further than 25 feet from my light source. However, if I do, I need to use the shield/sock which improves reliability at long distances. Works great with a 430EXII, 430EX is the worst and needs the shield even at close distance. I went with the TT1 & TT5 because I already had PlusIIs and can be triggered by TT1 or TT5.

I'm not familiar with RP, so I can't speak to how well they work.

I just decided to go the Popper route for my University. I have 3 TT5's and 6 PW plus II's. I plan to add 2 multimaxes for Remote camera triggering along with the Plus II's. The TT5's are pretty complicated when you get into the commputer setup and see choices you have no clue about. I did successfully trigger 6 strobes equipped with plus II's from a TT5 on camera at one hockey game, but when I shot the 3rd period they stopped working, even after a battery change. I am going to approach more of the work I used to do with conventional monolights with Canon Speedlights in the future.

I've been researching is same topic and posted some thoughts at www.bobrockefeller.com.

It still seems as if the PocketWizards are poor at distances over 50' and there are many sports of them actually damaging Canon 580EX series speedlites.

Does anyone know of a change in that?

I am new to the forum and this might be old news but I have a 5D2, two 580EX2s and my old 35mm era 420 EZ. I have an RP jrx transmitter, three receivers and canon cubes for each. These work seamlessly at any useful distance although I have not tried to fire them at 100yds or more. The RPs produce a wider range of response from the 580s that can be achieved in manual but, as has been noted previously, the 420EZ's TTL will only give a full pop under all settings unless in manual and does not respond to the Canon cube except with a full pop. RP support had no answer for this. 420EZ also has a time out function which cannot be disabled, which makes it a pain to use for more than a few minutes at a time. I intend to replace it with another 580 at some stage. Hope this is useful to those who want radio triggers. Jrx's are a much more cost effective solution than PW's and seem to be just as good, unless you are a pro with deep pockets.
