FEC or output strength with EM

I am a bit bewildered by the manual external metering mode. There doesn't seem to be a way to control flash output level in this mode. I am learning to use a light meter (Sekonic L-358) with the 580EXll. Would be grateful for pointers or tips for using the two together in EM mode.

I don't own the 580 but isn't EM mode where the flash has a sensor on it to meter the flash non TTL? If so, how are you trying to use the meter with it?
To use the meter, set it to measure flash, set the flash to Manual mode, set a power level that you think might be close to what you want and take a reading. Adjust the flash power to taste or move the flash closer or farther away.

Yeah External Metering Mode, is the same as older Thyristor controlled flashes.

You set to an aperture and the flash cuts off when enough light has been emitted to effect an acceptable exposure. There is no way to adjust it really.

You just need to use you flash in manual, measure the light with your meter and then set your aperture to suit
